The Prince was granted more freedom from the King after the birth of his son. Once again, he found himself curious of life outside the palace. It was among his trips outside of the palace that the Prince learned about suffering. He first discovered a man who was suffering from age. Second he came upon a man who was sick and lastly he came upon death. Because of his life within the palace, he had never experienced any of this before and found it to be very troubling. It was on his fourth trip that he met an ascetic. An ascetic is a person who gives up pleasures, possessions, money, and shelter. The prince did not understand how an ascetic could have so much peace when there was so much suffering. The ascetic explained "To be free of suffering, one must give up the desires, pleasures, and comforts of the world. I find peace by helping others find peace."
